That would be… 23 holes! One per Polo, to be exact.
Obviously, as with any product, the Polo people might sometimes produce size variations as ‘specials’. But 23 is the number in your everyday, standard, ‘oooh, I’ll just grab a packet of Polos whilst I’m paying for my petrol’ minty tubes.
Invented in that late 1940’s period when British manufacturers had moved on from the necessities of wartime production and were looking for fun new products to delight the nation, Polo mints have been pouring out of the old Rowntree’s factory in York ever since.
They’re a sweet that appears to have been around forever; one of the householdest of household names; instantly familiar on the shelves. But for some reason, Polo mints have never become dated or old-fashioned.
Give some credit to the canny marketing folk at Polo HQ for that – they’ve neither sat on their laurels, nor messed with the core product. Even if the 1980’s introduction of ‘tropical fruit’ Polos was universally considered a Bad Idea.
And is there anybody in Britain who doesn’t know what you’re talking about if you mention ‘the mint with the hole’?
So, as a bonus question, and without reaching for a packet and a ruler… to the nearest millimetre, what is the diameter of those holes?

It’s around eight millimetres. It’s always been eight millimetres and, unlike all those annoying ‘shrinkflation’ products… it’s stayed eight millimetres!
