Coffee break question: ‘Energy balls’..?!?

Which chocolate product was originally marketed as ‘energy balls’?

Maltesers.

That’s right, Maltesers.

This Q&A from the LOGO Board Game deserves a bit of explanation. It’s not as if that – in the days before Red Bull – your granddad would simply pop a few Maltesers to get him through a tough day.

In fact, Maltesers have generally been marketed towards women. This was right from their 1930’s introduction, when they were positioned as something that might help the consumer lose weight.

(Maltesers can arguably help you lose weight if you devour them in place of most other chocolate products. We’ll gloss over the slimming option of, say, not eating chocolate at all).

So, why ‘energy balls’? That’s because of the core of malted milk, a substance that was considered somewhat of a wonder product back then.

Malted milk was invented as a dietary supplement for infants, but caught on with the wider public in a big way. For a ‘health’ product, it was surprisingly delicious, relatively straightforward to produce, and priced within the reach of working families.

And it was genuinely nutritious. So much so that polar explorers – the heroes of the age – gave it a huge boost in the public consciousness when they packed crates of it to enable them to face Earth’s most hostile environments.

Hence the ‘energy balls’ moniker for our chocolate-covered malted milk treats. Remember that when you crack open the big box at Christmas.

Here’s a bonus question for the Malteser-lovers amongst you: there are balls, bars and truffles… but Maltesers are also available in which animal shape?

Rabbits! Or, Easter Bunnies to be strictly accurate. Maltesers Mini Bunnies are available seasonally to add extra Maltesery-loveliness to your egg hunt. As if the kids need any extra energy on Easter morning…
